Lightning bugs.
The only way Amy and Jaime could be any more awesome
would be if their names didn't rhyme.
But oh well.
Thanks tons to them and Maynard House
for the overwhelming hospitality.
I've stayed there 4 times now,
and every time there's new house members.
But every time I'm treated like a king.
This time around,
we started working on Amy's chest piece.
We didn't finish, but after 4 hours we needed to wrap up the session.
A mason jar full of fireflies.
We need to do a lot of detail work,
and some line sculpting,
but it's a good start.
Thanks again to Off the Map Tattoo and Maynard House
for all they did for me this past week.
I look forward to coming back again soon(ish).

Some of the week's work.
Big Dean doesn't mess around,
especially when it comes to inside jokes.
Getting your friend's portrait tattooed on you?
That's pretty hardcore.
Implying that your friend is a dummy...
being manipulated by an actual dummy?
That seems like some line crossing action to me.
(and of course I was glad to help)
Camille came all the way out from Texas to get this tattoo,
which is beyond flattering.
It was her first ever, and she sat like a rock.
Her and her husband entertained me with stories,
instead of it being the other way around.
The week was kind of a blur.
I did work on Todd's sleeve (below) and Megan's chestpiece,
got to meet some awesome new people,
and hang out with a bunch of old friends.
Kelly Doty is kicking so much ass out here in MA,
it's inspiring and humbling at the same time.
Keep an eye on her, for sure.
(she apprenticed at Turnpike while I was there)
I'm less sick right today,
which is great,
but I leave MA behind tomorrow.
Only two days of visiting in CT,
and then we fly back to MPLS.
These visits/working vacations are nuts.
Never enough time,
and too many people/tattoos to fit in.
Anyone I miss will just have to come visit me in Minneapolis.

Vintage Ad Series: Smoking is Believing!
Its been awhile since I've run a mini series, so I thought I'd get back in the swing of it. So here I introduce: Vintage Ads, with today's installment, "Smoking is Believing". It is amazing to look back at how naive we were, as a nation about smoking. Of course big tobacco companies wanted everyone to believe how great smoking was, and were quite effective at it. Check out the copy of this ad: "During the summer season of extra smoking-begin enjoying the cigarette of extra smokes! Everyone can afford the coolness, the true mildness, the ripe, delicate taste and fragrance of smoking pleasure at its best. More smoking for your money." Did they really say "season of extra smoking? What the heck is that about anyway!

Sometimes the Truth Hurts...
Today I received feedback from someone about a matter where I expressed my opinions. Following my conversation with this person, I understood the implications. I'm being cryptic, but my message back is that sometimes, truth hurts. If you'd like a refresh on the matter, you may remember this post from a few months ago. I stand by those remarks and hope that it helps explain my true intentions. Yes, Integrity Does Matter- a lot. At least in my book anyway.

What a lovely way to burn
I am one sick dude.
There's no thermometer around for proof,
but I'm pretty sure I've got a fever.
(and I've been beating up the Maynard House's lavatory pretty bad as well)
But I'm booked solid at Off the Map Tattoo,
and I'm not one to call in sick.
Ever.
(what am I, an a-hole?)
Here's a couple of tattoos I've done out here so far.
The owl was photographed at a weird angle,
so the head looks a little warped,
but it's fine in real life.
And more black and grey book themes:
I'm four tattooing days down,
with only two more to go.
But I saved the longest days for last.
Wish me luck.
I could use it.
Luck, and a few more rolls of toilet paper.

A powerful idea for a sunny garden in Brewster

So our sister-town of Brewster on Cape Cod seems to be moving steadily towards the green goal of self-sufficiency in energy needs with a rather special type of gardening.
Brewster's Town Administrator Charles Sumner has described as "very appropriate" the idea of a solar garden on land owned by the town which would use the power of the sun to provide electricity.

Shalom from East Budleigh!
I've always been intrigued by the fact that two men who played such an important role in American colonial history were both born in the same East Devon village.
Most people know a bit about Sir Walter Raleigh and if you don't you can browse http://budleighbrewsterunited.blogspot.com/2009/07/onion-not-potato.html and http://budleighbrewsterunited.blogspot.com/2009/05/more-about-sir-walter-c-1552-1618.html to discover my fascination with this great Elizabethan.
Roger Conant also was born in East Budleigh, just a few miles north of Budleigh Salterton, but almost half a century after Sir Walter. On this side of the Atlantic he may not be as well known as the man who is supposed to have introduced England to the potato and tobacco, but Massachusetts people know him as the founder of Salem and his statue is one of the best-known landmarks of that city.
Yet even Americans are sometimes mistaken on biographical details of this Devon-born pioneer of the first European settlements in the New World. A news item of 5 June 2005 mentioning the rededication of his famous statue implies that Roger Conant came from Dorchester, England http://hawthornehotel.blogspot.com/2005/06/roger-conant-statue-rededicated-june.html
The situation of the statue itself, in front of the Salem Witch Museum has apparently led many visitors to assume that the likeness of Conant with his tall hat is intended to be that of a sorceress! http://www.salemweb.com/tales/conant.shtml
What about his brother, poor old Christopher Conant who barely gets a mention in the history books? I discovered that he was born in 1588 in East Budleigh, was a Freeman of the Grocers' Company and emigrated, possibly with Roger, on the ship Anne in 1623 to Plymouth, Massachusetts. http://www.lyndon-estate.co.uk/04%20History/Family%20Tree%20Conant/ConantFamilyTree.pdf But what became of him after that?
And does the name of Salem come from Jerusalem, which is what I was told when I visited East Budleigh's Salem Chapel? Or is it to do with 'Shalom', the Hebrew greeting?

Hanneke is writing an article about East Budleigh and its transatlantic connections and is particularly interested in the history of Massachusetts, the Conant brothers and any modern-day descendants of the family. There has of course been a thriving Conant Family Association in the USA, its members feeling proud to be associated with one of their country's Founding Fathers. The New York Times recorded the Association's first meeting on 13 June 1901 when 200 descendants of Roger Conant gathered in the city which he had founded. Back East
Meryl and I made it to the East Coast,
and are hanging out with the Hebranks.
(it's a loud time here, for sure)
Today we did some forest trail hiking,
then went to Baltimore's Inner Harbor for dinner
and a lighthouse-turned-museum visit.
This is a screw-pile lighthouse built in 1856,
and was relocated to Pier 5 in 1988.
That's my mom and I, photo by Meryl.
This is the second lighthouse trip in a week,
but the Wisconsin ones were fresh water.
And this, my friends, is the Atlantic Ocean.
We're headed up to Brooklyn tomorrow,
and then Long Island
(where I hope to see at least one more).
Then north to Northampton, MA.
We're staying at the Maynard House, of course,
while I do my Off the Map Tattoo guest spot.
I have 6 super packed tattooing days lined up,
with some of the most fun tattoo ideas I could ask for.
Then to CT for a few days before heading back to MD.
Two weeks, kids.
We don't mess around.

Mystery Cruise to BERMUDA
Mystery Cruise destination was to Bermuda!
Well the surprise is over! Some of you guessed Bermuda correctly the locale of the Mystery Cruise. It is a lovely island with its own rich history and charming traditions that make it interesting to just poke around and explore. The beaches are pristine and quiet- undeveloped and a perfect place to get away from it all. I've also been enjoying of the local provinces, or Parishes as they call them here, such as St George, Hamilton, Sandys, Smith's and Devonshire. Horseshoe beach was the location of the family wedding we attended, which was a perfect spot for wedding nuptials with sweeping views of the coast. Here, in this photo I'm standing on the steps of St Peter's Anglican Church, which is the oldest continually used Anglican church in the Western Hemisphere. Originally built in 1612, it still has a feel of the olden days. While inside I spent a few moments to give thanks for this terrific vacation, it is a wonderful church to worship in. Bermuda has been a great place to vacation. Soon we'll set sail back to the US; after a few hot humid days in the beach resort atmosphere of this tiny island I'm looking forward to a few luxurious days at sea. Here are a few last photos I'd like to share:
