"Brew at the Zoo" Event at the Living Desert

It's been awhile since I've written about anything local in the Palm Springs area- mainly because I've been traveling extensively. Yesterday I attended the "Brew at the Zoo" fundraiser event at The Living Desert in Palm Desert, just down the road from me in Palm Springs. I've been a member of the Living Desert for ages, it is a fine animal reserve and sanctuary. Events such as this one help raise funds from private citizens in the local community who can re-engage with the zoo. I thought you might enjoy seeing a few photos from the event.

Camel rides were a nice touch- memorable too.

The "Brew at the Zoo" featured booths of multiple micro breweries and local restaurants serving sample size portions as people milled about. At the start of the evening, it was still quite hot, in the 90's but as the sun set, temperatures dropped and it was quite pleasant.

I always enjoy live music, it adds atmosphere and sets the mood of the evening. I forgot to catch the name of the band playing, but they were fun- the crowd seemed to enjoy it. I paused for a few minutes, focusing on that lion sitting on the stage...

The Living Desert has a great reputation for conservation through preservation, education and appreciation. Its grounds are exceptional examples of the Colorado desert, this photo alone exemplifies the natural beauty of desert life in this part of the Southwest United State deserts. Incidentally the spindly plant in the center is called an Ocotillo plant, and has beautiful flowers when it blooms.

It turned out to be a great evening, and a lot of fun too. I really enjoyed being outside at the zoo. It was a tremendous opportunity to truly relax and enjoy the unique views of Palm Desert. For those of you living in the Coachella Valley, I'd strongly recommend attending next year. First- do yourself a favor, sign up to be a member of The Living Desert. For a small donation, you can visit the zoo anytime. Even for any snowbirds who visit our fair desert community, I'd suggest a visitor pass. You will enjoy the time viewing the extensive collection of plants and cactus, exhibits like Hummingbirds and Butterflies, reptiles, big cats and other all sorts of other creatures. Earthquake Felt in Palm Springs at 3:40 PM today

Today, at 3:40 PM PT on Easter Sunday we experienced the effect of a magnitude 7.2 earthquake that struck Baja California in northwestern Mexico. We were sitting at home and felt a rumble-rolling like sensation. I could feel the ground shaking under the house. Our two standard poodles, Sheldon and Duncan barked slightly, and our cat Owen looked wide-eyed and alert. John went out of the house, while I grabbed the dogs and held them close to me just to make sure they felt safe and secure, while I kept an eye on the kitty.

It was the longest earthquake I've ever felt since living in Southern California these past twelve years. I heard the crystal and china vibrating as the house shook ever-so-slightly. The sound of the rumbling was definite. We had no visible damage of any kind, and soon it passed. I noticed the water in our pool sloshed around a bit also. I did have a lingering sensation, similar to motion sickness- similar to being on a boat for awhile and returning to land when it feels as if things are still moving. (that may well be in my head).

When it had passed, I jumped online, Tweeted and posted things on Face Book and saw the barrage of comments flying by on Twitter especially. Friends in San Diego reported things flew off shelves, while people in LA said chandeliers swung and blinds vibrated. All in all, a non-event for us living here in the Coachella Valley. Palm Springs was spared any damage, thankfully.

San Diego Fires: Taking Care of Your Pet

If you life in Southern California where the wildfires are burning and have a pet, there are some things you should know about to help keep your pet healthy. During emergencies such as wildfires, animals experience a spike in adrenalin, increased sense of panic and general confusion, similar to humans.

In particular dogs, cats and birds are especially sensitive to the smoke. In many cases they can smell smoke before humans can. Typically you will observe nervousness, aggression and resistance to being contained. Be especially careful when handling your pets, as they may attempt an uncharacteristic escape.

Air Quality

If you have the ability to minimize their expose to smoke, do whatever you can. Running an air purifier in your home will be also be helpful. Cats and birds are especially susceptible to respiratory complications associated with smokey air.

Clean their Fur, Skin and Paws

If your pet has been outdoors, the falling ash may be on their fur. Use a good comb to brush out your dog or cat's coat. It is important to get the ash out, so they do not ingest the ash as they try to groom themselves.

Comfort your pet to help them relax

Your pet can sense your own stress as well. Help them calm down by doing a few simple things:

For Dogs: If it is safe, take them for a long walk, give them plenty of exercise and play with them.

For Cats: Distract them as much as possible by using toys, and treats.

For Birds: Provide toys, be sure they are clean and your bird is interested in them.

Dogs & Cats: Brush them, this rythym alone usually helps soothe their nerves

All pets: Where appropriate, bathe your pets, provide fresh water for them to access other than for drinking.

Reward your pet with healthy treats and provide lots of love and attention during the day.
